Journal IX: Urban Elegy
Volume IX, Urban Elegy showcases 33 writers with 18 returning authors from our workshops throughout Greater Boston. Although each and every piece may not have an obvious “urban” focus or reference, the work is a reflection of our presence in city spaces where we gather each week and write in community, supporting one another’s stories. And, true to the broader context of the current, American experience, this book is also a lament. Or, maybe, it’s that we’re just beginning to really confront the pain of addiction, racism, poverty, disability, mental illness, violence, and personal loss, out loud, without so much shame. This year’s journal is divided into five chapters emulating the five stages of grief: Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and Acceptance. However, each chapter opening is an attempt to be more of an invitation for your own interpretation and thoughtfulness, rather than a conclusion. And, like the processing of grief, it doesn’t need to be approached in a linear fashion. Notably, nature (often in unexpected places) is recurring in the work, as more than a simple metaphor or cliche. And, although elusive, it’s hard to miss the strength and power of so many symbols as a sign of hope for those still seeking and searching.
